I began making quilts when I was 19, and one of the first was a coffin quilt. It felt important to me to revive practices that had been going by the wayside for decades. The use of fabric, especially in colors and patterns evocative of the person honored, softens the hardness and finality of a coffin, bringing beauty and warmth to the experience for all who are present. A quality coffin quilt can double as a cover when a loved one is removed from the home or an institutional setting, easing transitional moments for those who are witnessing. Most importantly, a well-chosen quilt can become a treasured family heirloom used again and again for precisely the same purpose for generations.
